John: "My hand has to shoot up first"„
I am a dog trainer. I came to Toastmasters with stage fright, stress, and an inner saboteur.
I decided that I would improvise at every meeting for six months. It doesn't work halfway.
The more you procrastinate and consider, the more likely it is that you won't apply in the end.
That's why when the question comes up about who's going to improvise, my hand goes up first. I don't think about it.
After six months, I have stage fright under control. I can compose my thoughts faster and get to the point. Stress has completely disappeared.
Today I would stand in front of a hundred people and talk about dogs. Totally cool.

A question you're not ready for.

„"How would you lead a team?"“
Networking
30 seconds with a potential client.
Presentation
An unexpected question from the audience.
Date
The conversation gets stuck. She waits.
Celebration
„"Say a few words!"“
Phone call
An angry client calls.
At home
The child asks "why?"„
Problem
Without training you will freeze.
Silence
Empty head. You speak too late.
No point
Words go, thoughts don't.
Late
You'll come up with the best answer in the car.
You are silent.
The braver will take the opportunity.
Solution
Practice the unexpected
Spontaneity can be practiced
It's not talent, it's skill. The process is always the same: topic, 10 seconds to think, one idea, example, point. Feedback after each attempt.
A new topic at each meeting. With repetition, surprise turns into routine.
→ What paralyzes you today, you will be able to handle in a few months.
A mistake here costs you nothing.
You'll sweat a lot. No one will kick you out. You'll get feedback and try again.
→ "It is training that makes the student a master."„
You engage a different part of your brain.
A prepared speech is based on a plan and memory. Improvisation is based on split-second decisions: what I will say, in what order, how I will end.
→ You formulate an idea under pressure.
Result
The question will surprise you. You won't freeze.
In a few months:
Consultation
The boss turns to you. Three sentences, the point. They're listening to you.
Conference
Name, one sentence, question back. Meeting arranged.
Date
The conversation gets stuck. You make a joke and move on.
Celebration
Microphone in hand. One story, a toast, applause.
Because you are trained.
Experience
From the first awkward moment to the emergency room
I first came in August and I was extremely embarrassed during the first improvisation. Everyone else did perfectly.
I wanted to wrap it up and not show up again. But the members gave me encouraging feedback. When a guy who won a national speaking competition tells you that he sees potential in you, you don't dismiss it.
I came back. With quality feedback, I improved session after session.
After five months, I believe in myself. My speeches are listenable. I can captivate and make people laugh. And when I'm surprised by a question, I don't stay silent — I express myself briefly.
I was a staunch introvert. Today, I take every speaking opportunity that comes my way.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is improvisation in Toastmasters?
Improvisations are short speeches on an unknown topic, best for developing your creativity. At each Toastmasters meeting, usually five people sign up after prepared speeches and evaluations. Everyone is given a topic they know nothing about in advance, and they immediately speak about it for 1–2 minutes — with 10 seconds to think and one attempt. You practice spontaneity, alertness, and reaction to unexpected situations.
How to learn to speak without preparation?
By regular practice in front of people, not by reading. At Toastmasters improvisations, you get a new, unfamiliar topic at every meeting and specific feedback after your performance. Ján Zrebný improvised at every meeting for half a year — today, stage fright doesn't hold him back.
How to handle an unexpected question in a meeting or interview?
In a few seconds, choose one idea, say it briefly, and end with a punchline. This is exactly what improvisations are about: giving a short answer to a topic you don't know in advance, in front of a group of people, and without the possibility of correction.
What should I do if someone surprises me and I freeze?
Freezing is a common reaction to an unexpected situation. It disappears when you get used to the unexpected. Viktor was embarrassed during his first improvisation and wanted to quit. After five months and eight sessions, he says, „When a question surprises me, I no longer remain silent, but I can express myself briefly.“
How quickly will I improve at improvisation?
It depends on how often you go on stage. Viktor felt the change after 5 months and 8 sessions. Ján improvised for half a year at every session and always came first. A simple rule applies: the more often, the faster the progress.
What is an elevator pitch and how to practice it?
An elevator pitch is about a 30-second introduction: who you are, one or two key points, and establishing contact. It takes about the same amount of time as an elevator ride. You don't have time to prepare and you only get one attempt — so it's best to practice improvising.
Will improvisation also help in private, for example on a date?
Yes. Spontaneity and alertness aren't just needed at work. They'll help when a conversation on a date gets stuck, when you're handed the microphone at a party, or when a child asks something that doesn't have a simple answer.
What else can Toastmasters help me with?
In addition to improvisations, each meeting has other parts. On prepared speeches you practice performing in front of an audience. When ratings you learn to give and receive feedback. And in club management You practice leadership with real people.
